Bermusik Dengan PC
Komputer bisa dipakai untuk menghasilkan musik seperti dimainkan oleh satu grup musik dengan peralatan lengkap. Dasarnya, hanya butuh sedikit perangkat dan tentu saja sedikit jiwa seni.
Dengan musik komputer, seseorang bisa merekam contoh (sample) suara ke dalam PC, kemudian menggu-nakannya kembali untuk diga-bungkan dengan sampel suara lain atau dengan musik yang dimainkan dengan alat musik yang sebenarnya.
Definisi Musik Digital
Musik jenis apa yang disebut dengan musik digital?
Apakah CD audio dapat dibilang musik digital? Apakah MP3, WMA, MIDI, dan format file musik lain disebut sebagai musik digital?
Ada beberapa pendapat yang berbeda mengenai arti musik digital, Pertama, musik digital ialah musik yang dikemas secara digital. Jadi CD audio, MP3, dan WMA merupakan contoh musik digital
Kedua, musik digital ialah musik yang diolah secara digital. Musik ini dihasilkan oleh alat musik asli, kemudian diolah secara digital. Misalnya, dalam sebuah lagu terdiri dari gitar akustik, bas, piano, dan drum. Lagu yang dimainkan oleh masing-masing alat musik direkam secara terpisah dan tidak berbarengan. Kemudian, dengan menggunakan perang-kat tertentu, suara-suara terse-but dipadukan serta diedit dan disempurnakan.
Terakhir, musik digital ialah musik yang dibuat secara digital. Saat pembuatan, suara-suara dihasilkan dengan me-rangkai sampel-sampel suara alat musik yang sudah ada, tanpa membutuhkan alat mu-sik. Musik digital tipe terakhir ini dapat dibuat tanpa bantuan alat musik sama sekali, hanya menggunakan komputer.
Mengapa Menggunakan PC
Dengan bantuan komputer dalam membuat musik digital tipe ketiga, keuntungannya adalah seseorang tidak perlu bisa memainkan alat musik. Kita tinggal mengambil sampel suara, meletakkannya pada tempat yang tepat, mengga-bungkannya dengan sampel-sampel suara yang lain se-hingga menjadi sebuah lagu.
Dengan menggunakan kompu-ter PC, kita dapat membuat musik dengan cara yang jauh lebih murah, karena dengan PC, ratusan bahkan ribuan alat musik bisa didapat untuk bereksperimen.
Mengenai perangkat untuk bermusik secara digital secara sederhana, alat yang dibu-tuhkan tak rumit. Dari segi perangkat keras, PC yang dilengkapi dengan kartu suara sudah cukup. Prosesornya cukup Pentium II saja, sudah bisa jalan. Kalau mau lebih mudah dalam bermusik boleh dilengkapi dengan keyboard MIDI.

MIDI
MIDI singkatan untuk Musical Instrument Digital interface. Ini adalah protokol yang ditetapkan di tahun 1983.
Pengertian yang sangat penting, adalah bahwa MIDI tidak mempunyai suara. MIDI mewakili "event" seluruh VST (Virtual Studio Technology) instrument yang dipakai MIDI dan banyak orang telah keliru, mempercayai bahwa MIDI adalah seperti suatu "sound generator". MIDI secara sederhana nya mentransfer informasi mengenai "event-event" seperti "pitch", "velocity", dan "duration" dari sebuah notasi.
Jadi, untuk contohnya, ketika kita menggunakan sebuah keyboard MIDI untuk memainkan suatu vst instrument, dan kita menekan tuts C1, keyboard MIDI terus mengirimkan informasinya bahwa not ini telah ditekan.
Apa yang begitu berguna dari MIDI adalah dari suatu protokol standard industri yang mengijinkan alat musik elektronik dapat berkomunikasi dengan yang lainnya. Sebelumnya, alat-alat musik yang berbeda dengan masing-masing konfigurasi-konfigurasi yang berbeda. Sekarang, ini memungkinkan untuk menulis sesuatu dengan hanya pada synthesizer, dan kemudian mengirimnya ke "Digital Audio Workstation" untuk menggunakan suara-suara yang kita suka. Memang kita juga dapat melakukan sebaliknya. Kita dapat mengirim "MIDI messages" (data-data MIDI) dari DAW ke alat yang lainnya. Data-data MIDI ini tidak mempunyai suara, data MIDI tersebut dapat dimainkan untuk seluruh jenis "event-event". Kabel MIDI biasanya digunakan didalam sebuah konfigurasi IN-OUT, tetapi ada juga konfigurasi MIDI Thru, yang mentransfer

Jika kita mencari di internet, kita dapat menemukan koleksi dari beberapa MIDI song. Kita dapat membuka file MIDI di Cakewalk atau Cubase dan membacanya seperti misalnya tulisan not baloknya.
Untuk memaksimalkan kompatibilitasnya, tahun 1991, GM (General MIDI) dibuat. Ini adalah protokol yang ditetapkan, seperti poliphony, pemberian nomor program suara. Sebelumnya, sebuah synthesizer A dapat menggunakan program nomor 1, misalnya untuk sebuah suara string dan synthesizer B menggunakan program nomor 1 untuk suara piano. Dengan GM, ada sebuah ketentuan untuk setiap instrumen, misalnya program nomor 17 adalah untuk suara Drawbar Organ, program nomor 1 adalah untuk suara piano. Jadi, kita dapat pastikan, sebuah MIDI song yang dimainkan di alat musik/ synthesizer A, suaranya sama dengan yang dimainkan di synthesizer B.
Parameter MIDI yang begitu penting ketika menulis musik, adalah "velocity", seberapa kerasnya sebuah not dimainkan. Ada juga "aftertouch", yang artinya adalah tekanan tambahan yang dipakai setelah kita menekan sebuah tuts dan "sustain" yang dalam permainan Piano Akustik serta "Pitch bend" yang dapat digunakan ketika menirukan permainan sebuah gitar listrik.
